600 BCT - 500 BCT
Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha (Sanskrit: "awakened one"), is the founder of Buddhism, one of the major religions and philosophical systems of southern and eastern Asia. The name Siddhartha Gautama is derived from the clan name (Sanskrit) Gautama or (Pali) Gotama, and the personal name (Sanskrit) Siddhartha or (Pali) Siddhatta. Siddhartha Gautama was born between the 6th and 4th century BCT, however, many sources set the date of his birth as 563 BCT. He was born in Lumbini, near Kapilavastu, Shakya republic, Kosala kingdom [now in Nepal]. He died in Kusinara, Malla republic, Magadha kingdom [now Kasia, India].
- 547 BCT: Siddhartha Gautama gets married at the age of 16 in Kapilavastu.
- 534 BCT: Prince Siddhartha goes outside the palace for the first time and sees The Four Sights: an old man, an ill man, a dead man, and a holy man. He is shocked by the first three—he did not know what age, disease, and death were—but is inspired by the holy man to give up his wealth. He leaves his house and lives with three ascetics. However, he wants more than to starve himself, so he becomes a religious teacher.
- 528 BCT: According to legend, Tapassu and Balluka, two North Indian traders who lived in a city of Pushkaravat, offered Siddhatha Gautama his first meal after his enlightenment. In return, the Buddha gave eight strands of his hair to the two brothers, who brought the strands to the eastern coast of Sri Lanka and enshrined them in a small pagoda in an area called "Thanthirimale". The pagoda is called "Giri-hadu-Saya" in present day Trincomalee. It has been renovated and enlarged several times by various kings of Sri Lanka.
- Before 500 BCE: Maya Devi Temple is erected in Lumbini, Nepal. It is "possibly the earliest evidence of Buddhist structures ever found and the first archaeological evidence of Buddha's life".[1][4][5]
